FAQs

How does Invisalign® compare to traditional braces?

Traditional braces and Invisalign® clear aligners are both great solutions for crooked teeth. There is some general criteria that each treatment is best suited for in order to achieve maximum effectiveness. Dr. Bateson offers Invisalign® to her patients who meet these guidelines and will therefore have an excellent result. She will refer patients to a highly respected Orthodontist if it is in their best interest to do so.

You may be a good candidate for Invisalign® if you have any of the following issues with your teeth, in a less severe case:

  • Gapped teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite

The benefits of Invisalign® include:

  • Removable aligners (simply put them on” and take them “off”)
  • Appearance (they’re clear!)
  • Comfort
  • Treatment time
  • Cleaning

How often should I have dental check-ups?

Dr. Bateson and her team would like to see you often enough to decrease your time and expense spent on serious dental procedures. The old proverb, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” rings true. The ultimate goal is to see you often enough to decrease the likelihood of more serious dental issues, like cavities and gum disease.

The American Dental Association recommends seeing your dentist twice a year for most patients. However, each person’s mouth is different and therefore a one-size-fits-all package is not necessarily the end-all-be-all. Some patients may benefit from more frequent visits and some may be able to extend the visit to once a year. The minimum you should go between visits is 12 months. We recommend you speak with Dr. Bateson about the best plan for you and your family.

Do you offer teeth whitening?

Yes, Dr. Bateson’s office is pleased to offer two excellent options for whitening your teeth. Whitening will brighten your smile and bring about a more youthful appearance. We use the GLO™ LED and heat system and KoR® deep bleaching method with minimal to no sensitivity. Each treatment offers unique benefits.

The GLO process will begin with a one-time, one hour visit with our professional team and subsequent treatments can be done at home. The KoR package can all be done in the convenience of your home and are more suitable for those with sensitive teeth.

Dr. Bateson and one of our dental hygienists will determine your tooth shade and which tooth whitening options are best for you.

How can I tell if I have gum disease?

First of all, gum disease can become a serious condition if left untreated. Secondly, it doesn’t have to reach a serious state if you practice consistent home oral hygiene and you visit Dr. Bateson every six months for your check-ups. Despite this, gum disease can creep up and affect even the most diligent patient.

You could have gum disease and not recognize it because it typically doesn’t cause any pain. If you experience any of the symptoms below, contact Dr. Bateson’s office for an appointment:

  • Swollen and red gums
  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Constant bad breath
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth (this is called recession)
  • Pus in between the teeth
  • Changes in bite
  • Loose adult teeth

What do dental check-ups have to do with diabetes and blood sugar?

Your risk for cavities and gum disease increases in relation to having higher blood sugar. Gum disease can be more severe in diabetics, because diabetes lowers a person’s ability to resist infection and the healing process usually takes longer.

Preventing and treating infections in your mouth, like dental abscesses and gum disease, can help improve your blood sugar levels.
